The 3 Herbs That Healed My Gut
Share
In my last blog I shared how I healed my gut after 10 years of struggle and I mentioned there three herbs that particularly helped soothe my gut and increase my gut mucosal lining! You guys wanted to know how I use them—so here’s the deep dive!
I got this herbal recommendation from Dr Hawrelak and Dr DiNezza’s work—I’m not an expert just someone who finally found something that worked for me and had to share it with the world!
I get my herbs in bulk from Mountain Rose Herbs. I trust them because of their meticulous sourcing and third party testing, which is important these days because herbs are often faked on Amazon! I’ve been buying from them for years—even before I learned about these herbs!
The three herbs are: Marshmallow root, slippery elm, and Licorice root.
Important safety info:
Licorice root is not recommended for breastfeeding/pregnant mothers and those who struggle with potassium deficiency and it may interact negatively with some blood pressure medications, so check with your doctor first. It’s really useful for digestive health but not one I plan to take long term. For kids, pregnant/breastfeeding moms and those with blood pressure concerns I’d recommend swapping out for dandelion root and/or chamomile.
Marshmallow root, however is super gentle and, from all that I’ve read, safe for pregnant and breastfeeding moms. If you can only get one herb I’d use this one!
There isn’t a lot known about the safety of Slippery Elm for breastfeeding/pregnant moms but it’s generally believed to be safe. However, it’s also considered slightly endangered so another reason I try to only get it from Mountain Rose Herbs.
A bonus one I like to add is ginger for its soothing properties and taste!
Now, how I use it.
You can just drink it as a tea (1tsp each herb in one cup water). It’s best cold soaked overnight before straining and heating to drink or mixing in a shake.
But I made them into what I call my Gut-Gummies!
Gut Gummy Recipe:
4 cups water
1Tb marshmallow root
1Tb slippery elm
1Tb licorice root (or dandelion root or chamomile)
Honey to taste
4 Tb grass fed beef gelatin
one root ginger (optional)
Directions: In two cups of the water soak the herbs overnight. Strain the herbs and pour into a 9”x9” pan. Sprinkle the gelatin over the surface to bloom (that just means to hydrate, it’ll thicken and look wet). Take the remaining two cups of water and heat until boiling. Pour it over the tea and gelatin mixture and stir to “melt” the gelatin until it looks liquid again. Let it cool for just a minute and then stir in however much honey you’d like. (Optional: I’ve also played around with adding Ceylon cinnamon at times for a different flavor) Place in the fridge for a few hours until firm jello consistency, then cut into squares.
Dosage: take one cup of tea a day, or 3 (1 inch) gummy squares a day—I took one with each meal. I did this every day for about a month (though I had results in just a week). Now I just take as needed if I go out to eat or my stomach feels a little unsettled.
I don’t know about you but even though I love herbs I’m sometimes skeptical about how effective they’re going to be—this concoction I find to be VERY effective! Particularly when paired with the other things I shared in my last video!
Hope this helps you as it did me!
